Italy: Protezione Civile Regione Piemonte

Local authorities play an important role in Italian civil protection organization; the Piedmont regional civil protection department, like the other 19, works in close connection with the national one and the sub-regional ones.

The headquarter is in Torino, where both the offices and the control room are located, and there are 5 logistical seats located one for each main sector of the region.

About 25 people work (officers, technicians, employees) in our organization and nearly 10’000 volunteers, organized in hierarchical coordination levels, are involved in ordinary activities and emergency operations, according to the local authorities needs.

Forecasting, prevention, rescue and recovery activities are carried out by the control room with the contribution of the following functions:

• Technical
• Training and communication
•  Voluntary management
• Means and materials
• Telecommunications and ICT
• Forest fire fighting
• Administration

The Regione Piemonte “High capacity pumping” module deals mainly with the “Means and materials” function and was recently designed in order to achieve the 2007 EU Commission Decision requirements with the capability of being deployed in quite different operating conditions and with particular care towards self-sufficiency.

Equipment:

Main components:

- 1 x 640 kW electric power unit (ISO 20’ shelter)

- 1 x 100 kW electric power unit

- 2 x centrifugal immersed 54 kW pump (electric) with float – (200 l/s flow for 20 m height difference)

- 1 x centrifugal immersed 20 kW pump (electric) with float – (50 l/s flow for 25 m height difference)

- 2 x motorpump (suction pump) 100 l/s flow for 18 m height difference

- 3 x electric pump control panel

- 600 m sheated electric cables with IP67 connections

- 2000 m flattening PVC hoses (200-250 mm diameter) with spherical Storz connections

- 18 x float for electric plugs

There will be 18 vehicles that participate in the exercise (including trucks, vans, cars and trailers)
